Every July, our counselling desk gets the same question from a hundred different students: “What course should I pick after 12th?” The honest answer is — there is no single right course. There is only the course that matches your strengths, budget, and the kind of life you want five years from now.
1. Start with the outcome, not the course name
Most students start by Googling popular course names. That’s backwards. Start by listing 3–5 jobs that sound interesting to you. Then look at what those jobs actually require in 2026 — many no longer need a specific degree, just demonstrable skills.
2. Be honest about your strengths
If you struggled with maths in 12th, an engineering degree will be a long four years. If you love writing and presenting, a pure technical course may bore you. Pick the path that plays to your strengths — you’ll work harder and learn faster.
The best course is the one you will actually finish — and finish well.
3. Factor in cost honestly
Tuition is only one part. Add hostel, books, transport, and the income you give up by not working. A ₹4 lakh course you take loans for is very different from a ₹40,000 skill program you finish in 6 months.
4. Test before you commit
Almost every field has free YouTube playlists or trial classes. Spend a weekend trying coding, design, accounting, or whatever you’re considering. If you can’t sit through 4 hours of basic videos, you won’t enjoy 4 years of it.
5. Talk to people doing the job today
Not your relatives. Find someone on LinkedIn doing the role you want, 3–5 years into it, and ask: What would you do differently? What surprised you? One 15-minute call saves a year of regret.
If you want help mapping your options, our free counselling session walks you through this framework with real college and course data for Uttarakhand and across India. Book a call and let’s figure it out together.
